Summary

To keep every Realm running smoothly, CatCraft limits how many mobs, animals and vehicles can be packed together, and how many redstone and storage blocks fit in one chunk. The limits are close to what most farms need, but large farms should be planned around them. Limits differ slightly between the Red, Green and Blue Realms, so check the column for your Realm.

All limits on this page apply in the main Overworld, the Resource world, the Nether and the End. Limits may change over time, so keep an eye on the changelog channel on our Discord server.

How the limits work

  • A limit like “30 within 20 blocks” means no more than 30 of those mobs can be within 20 blocks of each other.
  • Once a group is at its limit, new mobs of that kind will not spawn or breed there.
  • Mobs above a limit are removed automatically. The server checks every few minutes.
  • Name tags do not exempt a mob. Named mobs count toward every limit.
  • Most rules skip tamed pets, but tamed horses, wolves, cats, happy ghasts and copper golems still count toward their own limits.

Happy ghasts 8 within 32 blocks 8 within 32 blocks 8 within 32 blocks
Mobs from spawners 20 within 50 blocks 20 within 50 blocks 20 within 50 blocks

Mobs from spawners have no AI, but they still have water physics, so spawner farms that use water streams still work.

Vehicle limits

Vehicles Red Green Blue
Boats and chest boats 10 within 30 blocks 10 within 30 blocks 10 within 30 blocks
Minecarts (each type) 5 within 32 blocks 5 within 32 blocks 5 within 32 blocks
Hopper minecarts 3 within 32 blocks 3 within 32 blocks 3 within 32 blocks

On the Red and Blue Realms, extra boats and hopper minecarts packed into a single chunk are also removed, so spread them out rather than stacking them in one chunk.

Large animal groups

When 15 or more animals stand within 5 blocks of each other, they stop wandering around and stop pushing each other. This keeps big animal pens from lagging. Animals that are named, tamed, on a lead or ready to breed are not affected, and the animals still grow, breed and drop items as normal.

On the Green Realm, allays that are close together also stop wandering.

Chunk limits

These limits apply per chunk (a 16 x 16 block column) on every Realm. Once a chunk is full, you can’t place any more of that block there.

Block Limit per chunk
Hoppers 64
Pistons 64
Observers 64
Redstone repeaters 64
Redstone dust 128
Spawners 128
Beds 128

Mob spawning near players

  • Mob caps are per player, not server-wide, so one big farm doesn’t take all the mob spawning away from other players. The number of hostile mobs that can spawn around each player is much lower than in vanilla Minecraft.
  • Mobs only spawn within about 3 chunks (roughly 48 blocks) of a player.
  • Mobs more than 48 blocks from every player despawn straight away. Past 24 blocks (32 blocks on the Green Realm) they can also despawn at random.
  • Bats do not spawn naturally.
  • Mobs, crops and redstone only run within 4 chunks (about 64 blocks) of a player. Anything further away is paused until someone comes closer.
  • Phantoms only spawn for players who turn them on with /phantoms toggle. They are off for everyone by default.

AFK farm tips

  • The ideal AFK spot for a natural mob-spawning farm is just within 48 blocks of the spawning platforms. Any further and the mobs despawn as soon as they spawn.
  • Keep the whole farm within 4 chunks of where you stand, or it will stop running.
  • Build to the limits for your Realm. Extra mobs are removed, so a bigger pen won’t give you more drops.
  • For villager breeders and iron golem farms, see the troubleshooting tips on the Land Claiming & World Information page.
